How much will DCSEU pay to replace gas heat in DC?
By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC
If your DC house heats with gas and you're weighing a heat pump, the DC Sustainable Energy Utility pays rebates for exactly that switch. DCSEU lists up to about $5,000 for a heat pump replacing gas heat, and up to about $8,600 when other electric efficiency measures are stacked with it.
The DCSEU numbers
- Up to about $5,000 for a heat pump that replaces gas heating
- Up to about $8,600 when it's stacked with other electric efficiency measures
- A no cost pathway for income qualified households through the Affordable Home Electrification Program
Those are DCSEU's figures as of October 2026. DCSEU decides which homes and projects qualify, including who counts as income qualified.
Where we stand with DCSEU
DCSEU pays its rebates through contractors who take part in its programs. We don't, and we have no enrollment with any utility or city rebate either. A District homeowner who wants that $5,000 should hire one of DCSEU's participating contractors for the heat pump.
What a heat pump means in a DC house
A lot of the District's row houses were built with radiators and no ducts, so a heat pump there usually means ductless heads or an air handler in the attic. Swapping a gas furnace for one takes a DOB mechanical permit, and the gas and electrical work each need their own permit too. Our Washington, DC page goes through how row houses, condos and detached houses differ.
If you want the full price without a rebate, our estimate is free. We work out what the house and any ducts can carry before we talk brands, and the written price comes by text with a link to approve it.
Services this program can pay for
DCSEU's heat pump rebate matches our heat pump installation work, and HVAC replacement when the heat pump replaces a gas furnace and an old AC together.
