Furnace Repair

No heat, or heat that never feels warm, usually traces back to the ignition, the blower, the thermostat, a safety lockout or the gas valve. We find which one and fix it, and we inspect the heat exchanger on the same visit.

What we fix on a furnace call

If you're comparing furnace repair companies, ask each one for the diagnostic fee before they come, for what failed before they quote, and for the price in writing before they start. We do all of that on every call in Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia.

  • Furnace will not start
  • Heat comes on then shuts off
  • Air from the vents is not warm
  • Blower running with no heat
  • Burning smell when the heat runs
  • Furnace short cycling

What changes the price

  • Which part failed, and whether it's available for that model
  • Whether the fault is in the ignition, the airflow or the gas side
  • How old the furnace is, and whether its parts are still made

Before you book furnace repair

The furnace is unsafe and nobody tells you.

We inspect the heat exchanger, flue and combustion air on every repair visit. If the heat exchanger is cracked, we shut the furnace down and show you the crack.

You pay for a visit and it turns out to be a setting.

Look at the thermostat fan switch first. If it says ON, flip it to AUTO and the cold drafts should stop. If it was already on AUTO, book the visit. We tell you the fee on the phone.

You wait a week for a part.

Ignitors, flame sensors and pressure switches ride on the truck, so most no-heat repairs get finished on the first visit.

You spend a cold night waiting for a call back.

We book furnace calls for the next day in a set window and confirm it by text. If the furnace is completely out, say so and we mark it no heat.

When furnaces fail around DC

Furnace calls rise with the first cold snap, and DC's first freeze lands around November 12. Whatever is wrong with a furnace that's been off since spring tends to show up on those first cold nights. See furnace repair when it blows cold air.

How the job runs

  1. 1If a carbon monoxide alarm is going off, leave the house and call the gas utility first. We come once it's safe.
  2. 2We work through the ignition, flame proving, pressure switch, inducer and control board, starting from what you told us.
  3. 3On every visit we look over the heat exchanger, the flue and the combustion air, and that's included in the visit.
  4. 4You get the diagnosis and the price, and the repair waits for your yes.
  5. 5Once it's fixed we run the furnace through a full cycle to make sure it holds.

Furnace Repair questions we get asked

The furnace is blowing cold air. What should I check first?

⌄
The fan setting on the wall. ON runs the blower nonstop and moves unheated air between burns. AUTO runs it only while the flame is lit. If it still blows cold on AUTO, the problem is the ignition or the flame sensing, and it's time to book the repair.

What happens if you find a cracked heat exchanger?

⌄
We shut the furnace down and show you the crack. That's a safety problem, and it can't wait for a better time.
