Will weatherization assistance replace my furnace?

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

If the furnace is failing and money is tight, the Weatherization Assistance Program may clean, repair or replace it at no cost to you. It's federally funded. In Maryland the Department of Housing and Community Development runs it, and in DC the Department of Energy and Environment does.

What the program pays for

  • Furnace cleaning, tuning and safety repairs
  • Furnace replacement
  • Insulation in attics, floors and walls
  • Air sealing
  • Hot water system improvements

The cost to the household is nothing.

Who qualifies

Households at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Priority goes to elderly and disabled homeowners, families with young children and high energy users. That's how the program described it in October 2026, and the program decides who gets in.

How to apply

In Maryland you apply through the Office of Home Energy Programs, which refers applicants automatically, or you can call MD DHCD at 844-400-3423. In DC the program runs through the Department of Energy and Environment.

Where we stand

We aren't part of the Weatherization Assistance Program or any other assistance program. If you qualify, apply to the program first. It does the work for free, and we'd be charging you for it.

If you don't qualify, or you're waiting on an answer and the house is cold, we repair furnaces. We tell you the diagnostic fee when you book, find the failed part and give you the price before any work starts. Every heating visit checks the heat exchanger, the flue and the combustion air at no extra charge. If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone out and call the gas utility before you call anyone.

Services this program can pay for

The furnace side of the program lines up with our furnace repair, furnace installation and heating repair pages, and the cleaning and tuning with HVAC maintenance. Insulation, air sealing and hot water work are outside what we do.

Where this comes from

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), federally funded and run by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and the DC Department of Energy and Environment. Current as of October 2026.
