Indoor Air Quality, Filtration and Humidity Control

A house that feels damp in July, or leaves dust on every shelf, usually has a moisture or filter problem that running the system harder won't fix. We measure first, then sort out the humidity and filtration and match the filter to your equipment.

Air quality work we do

A filter rated too high for the system chokes the airflow, cuts the cooling and can freeze the coil. One rated too low lets dust build up on the coil instead.

Indoor Air Quality

The house feels damp or stuffy, or the air bothers someone living there, and running the system harder hasn't helped.

Air Filtration

You want cleaner air and a straight answer about which products actually do anything.

What people usually call us about

  • What filter should I use?

The one your system was built for. We'll tell you which that is, and it won't necessarily be the highest number on the shelf.

  • Will an air purifier fix a musty smell?

Not on its own. A musty smell usually means moisture, so we find where it's coming from before we install anything.

How we work

Filters only work if someone changes them

A filter helps only as long as somebody remembers to change it. On the Filter Swap Program we bring a new filter every quarter, put it in, and check the system on the same visit.

Before you buy an air quality product

You get sold a gadget that does nothing.

We measure humidity and airflow before we suggest anything. Each option comes with what it will fix and what it won't, and after an install we measure again.

The musty smell just gets covered up.

A musty smell means there's moisture somewhere. We find where before we install anything.

A better filter makes the system worse.

It can. A filter rated too high chokes the airflow, so we tell you which one your equipment was built for.

When the air feels worst around DC

DC's wettest months usually run May through July. A system that cools without pulling out moisture leaves the house damp, and an oversized one shuts off before it has dried the air. If dust is blowing out of the registers, see ductwork repair.

Indoor Air Quality Request

We take insurance jobs. Financing may also be available for qualifying projects. Ask when you call.

How the job runs

  1. 1We measure the humidity and the airflow so nobody has to guess which one is the problem.
  2. 2We check the filter against what the equipment was designed to handle.
  3. 3We look at run times. A system that never runs long enough can't pull moisture out of the air.
  4. 4You get the options, with what each one will fix and what it won't.
  5. 5Anything we install gets commissioned and measured again afterward.

Indoor Air Quality questions we get asked

Will a better filter fix my dust problem?

⌄
Sometimes. A filter rated too high for the system chokes the airflow and makes things worse, so pick the filter your equipment was built for and ignore the number on the box.

Do I need a whole-house dehumidifier?

⌄
Only if the equipment is right and the house is still damp. If the cooling system is oversized, that gets fixed first.

Installs we stand behind

A dehumidifier, filter cabinet or other add-on we fit carries our 60 to 90 day workmanship warranty, depending on the job, plus the maker’s warranty.

Measured before and after

You see the humidity and airflow readings behind the recommendation, and we take them again after the work so you can see if it helped.
