Why One Room Is Always Hotter Than the Rest

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

One bedroom is always five degrees off the rest of the house. People often spend money on equipment to solve it, and the equipment was rarely the problem.

The duct run that never had a chance

Long, flexible runs with sags and tight bends deliver a fraction of what a straight rigid run does. The room at the end of the worst run is the room that is always wrong.

The attic above it

A room under an uninsulated or poorly ventilated attic gains heat all afternoon. The system is fighting a ceiling that is radiating into the room, and no amount of cold air arriving through a bad duct wins that fight.

Nowhere for the air to go

A bedroom with a supply and no return only exchanges air when the door is open. Closed at night, it pressurizes, airflow drops and the room drifts. An undercut door or a transfer grille often fixes what feels like an equipment problem.

When it is the equipment

Sometimes it genuinely is: an oversized system that short cycles never runs long enough to even the house out. That is a sizing problem, and replacing like for like repeats it.

The order worth working through

  • Measure airflow at that register against a good one
  • Look at the duct run to it, in the attic or crawl space
  • Check the return path for that room
  • Check the insulation above the ceiling
  • Only then look at the equipment

One Room Never Comfortable?

Airflow at that room is measured and the run feeding it is traced, so the fix matches the actual cause.
